From a dazzling royal palace to the grand buildings and fountains of Plaza de Espana, Madrid will offer more than a tasty escapade of paella and tangy Gazpacho. We’ll be guided through the icons and the tastes of the city, beginning our love affair with tapas and churros, and continuing an already established affection for sangria…
This morning we wave adios to the inland to make some coastal discoveries, heading to the sultry Spanish mecca of Barcelona. Pretty bridges, cloud reflecting canals & Baroque buildings will split up our journey from Madrid to Barcelona. Here in the town of Zaragoza, you can stroll through coloured cathedrals, roll on the banks of the Rio Ebro and try the region’s famous cheese, tronchon. We’ll continue settling into the Spanish life on arrival in Barcelona, with a sensory delighting Tapas class. You can then hit the streets for some late night churros – they taste even better when devoured in their homeland.
Today our Trip Manager will guide us through the magical streets of beachside Barcelona, introducing us to the very best Tapas bars and guiding us through the delicacies of a local Spanish market. Top it all off with a Flamenco show served up over yet more tapas (trust us, you can never get enough) & maybe a little sangria to wash it all down.
This morning we say goodbye to the Spanish ways, in all their siesta taking and fiesta making glory. France – we’re coming for you. One of the 7 popes that resided in Avignon during 1309 and 1377 must have been a foodie, because this town can deliver delicious. Get comfortable at a typical French charcuterie and eat your way through an evening of delicacies.
This morning we’ll wake in the reverend glow of Avignon, excited for the next leg of the adventure. Just the word ‘Riviera’ should bring on the butterflies... Tree-arched streets and romantic old buildings will welcome you at our stop in Aix-en-Provence. Explore the pretty tree lined streets, sit by romantic fountains, and soak up the magnificence of this French city-commune formed in 123BC (whoa). Or, in-keeping with our now expanded tummies, why not find a local brasserie for a bite to eat – this city is a surprising culinary gem. Trading our croquetas for croissants and our sangria for snails, we arrive on the French Riviera. Sapphire waters and endless glamour will be ours for two nights in this region, a concept worth celebrating. What better way to celebrate than a trip to Monaco and its glamorous city of Monte Carlo.
Fresh stems of lavender and local honey can be yours after a morning sipping coffee whilst strolling the markets. Later we’ll be guided on a food tour of Nice Old Town, sampling the unique flavours of the glorious plains of southern France. Stay tuned for spicy saffron fish stew known as bouillabaisse, and the aniseed-flavoured liqueur of pastis.
Time to wave our fond farewells to France. If you haven’t already spent all your euros on barbecued lobster and truffle topped everything, we’ve got some great things lined up in ye old pasta land of Italy. Stopping off on the Italian coastline means many great things; fresh seafood first and foremost. The 18-kilometres of romantic crumbling cliffs and peppering of colourful villages and fishing ports of Cinque Terre will be ours. Being in Liguria, the birth place of pesto, we best sample plenty of the oily herbed goodness. We then venture to Pisa. Before we venture on for Florence, we’ll find ourselves in the region of one of the world’s greatest icons. Grab a few slices of Italian cheesy dough and create your own molto ridicolo Leaning Tower of Pizza photo.
Already feeling sufficiently enamoured with all things Italy, we’ll be keen to explore a little further. Armed with a cappuccino and a crostata (an Italian breakfast tart), we’ll give Pisa a “ciao bella” and hit the road for Florence. Arriving in the capital of Tuscany, we’ll likely be smitten from the drive in alone, with things only guaranteed to get better from here. After exploring the fabled cobbled streets surrounding the mighty Duomo Cathedral, falling (if possible) even harder for this medieval masterpiece of a city, the evening will be yours with options aplenty…gelato, cocktails, dancing, or…gelato?
Today in your Free Time, why not take a trip to the world’s oldest Gelateria – the pistachio is our personal favourite. If you’re keen to stay on the sweet theme you can grab a slice of castagnaccio, a Tuscan chestnut cake of sultanas and pine nuts. We’ll also take a guided walking tour of the city, seeing all the most iconic sights & learning of the region’s leather craft art.
Though it’s heartbreaking to see our time under the Tuscan sun coming to an end, the sampling of local wine en route to Rome should substantially ease the pain. Arriving in a time capsule of life on earth and the capital of the world’s greatest cuisine, we’ll check into our hotel feeling on cloud 9. The munching & exploring will begin without delay, as we see Rome’s most glorious icons & experience a traditional pizza party.
After breakfast, we’ll hit the streets for a locally guided tour. From the Colosseum to the Sistine Chapel, the day’s sights will be trumped only by the optional cooking class by evening. Turn down the chance to be taught the secrets of this country’s soulful cuisine by a local? We wouldn’t dare.
Dive into one last team breakfast and get ready for some heartfelt goodbyes. Today we wrap up our time on tour and return to our real life where we don’t Instagram every single meal. Best plan another food trip pronto.
